Global Crossing Announces Enhanced 911 for VoIP Service Providers

  • Expands VoIP Local Services portfolio with E911 capabilities.
  • Enables immediate compliance with new FCC regulations.
  • Available in more than 40 major markets in North America.

Florham Park, NJ - September 20, 2005 -- Global Crossing (NASDAQ: GLBC) today announced its Enhanced 911 (E911) solution for VoIP service providers, a new feature in its VoIP Local Services portfolio. By leveraging Global Crossing's wholly-owned and proven capabilities, VoIP service providers can now offer E911 to their end-users without installing and maintaining dedicated networks connecting to public safety access points (PSAPs).

"As increasing numbers of end-users adopt VoIP as their voice platform, service providers must be able to deliver E911 service in support of public safety," said Anthony Christie, Global Crossing's chief marketing officer. "These providers can now capitalize on our existing connections and extensive experience in providing E911 service to fixed line customers."

E911 is an emergency reporting system that reports the Automatic Number Identification (ANI) and the Automatic Location Identification (ALI) when connecting an emergency call to the assigned PSAP. This allows the PSAP to immediately identify the exact location of the caller's telephone and dispatch assistance at once, regardless of the caller's ability to communicate, when receiving a 911 call.

"Global Crossing's expertise in delivering E911 service, combined with its market penetration, was key to our selection," said Mark Richards, VoX Communications' president and CIO. "By adding this critical feature to our advanced VoIP portfolio, we'll deliver a complete solution to our residential and business customers, reliably and cost-effectively."

Currently available in more than 40 major markets across North America, E911 service for VoIP service providers is offered on Global Crossing-provisioned Direct Inbound Dialed (DID) numbers. Emergency calls originating on a customer's network are terminated to the appropriate PSAP. Global Crossing's E911 service will remain core functionality as the company expands its CLEC footprint.

On June 3, 2005, the FCC adopted new rules requiring that VoIP service providers supply E911 capabilities as a standard feature, either through interconnection to the relevant PSAPs or through a third party. The order adopting the new rules mandates that VoIP service providers implement these capabilities by November 28, 2005.

Global Crossing offers a comprehensive portfolio of wholesale VoIP services, including VoIP Local Services, VoIP Outbound Services, and VoIP Toll-Free Transport Services. An early adopter of VoIP, Global Crossing was one of the first providers to deploy a global VoIP platform more than four years ago delivering the quality, reliability and security that are not available from public Internet sources. The company transports more than two billion minutes of VoIP traffic per month, accounting for more than 55 percent of the company's total voice minutes.
